It is no secret that the holiday season is quickly approaching. The colors are changing from the warm oranges and yellows into the dazzling , spirited ones of reds and greens. More importantly, peoples hearts are becoming more open and the season of charity is beginning to commence. With this season of charity knocking on our door, we would like to propose something different, something new. We at Neighborhood Thrift have dedicated the past few, young years of our lives to a model that moves beyond charity and into the realm of empowerment. In a way, we seek to equip those in our community with the power to give. Giving is a good thing, but the action, which often comes out of genuine love can at times be harmful. Giving to those who are in need is good, in fact can be crucial. What if we had the chance to give, not as a gift, but more as a opportunity? Three years ago we, along side of The Well Community Church started Mission Christmas, we like to think that it is more than a program, it’s a opportunity. We have partnered with people, businesses, neighbors and anyone else who has caught this vision and helped them use their resources to empower our community. We simply ask for toys, toys that are slightly used or ones right off the shelf. We then take these toys and sell them for 50-60% of their normal retail value. Yes, it wouldn’t be difficult to hand these toys out to families, pre-wrapped and ready to go, but why rob someone of the opportunity to give the gift themselves? Each night, money that is generated from the toy sale will go into the following nights purchase to stock the shelves back up, if there is money generated at the end of Mission Christmas it will help to fund our benevolence fund. This fund helps to provide necessary items to those in emergency situations within our local community.
